Fall Yellowstone Trip

Fall is my favorite time to go to Yellowstone.  The crowds are gone, the air smells extra crisp, and if you get lucky you can even hear some elk screaming.  One of the roads we usually drive was closed so we went to a section of the park we'd never been to before and I loved it.  Fall isn't as colorful in Montana as it is in Utah and the lack of leaves was making me a little homesick.  The section we went to made me feel like I was driving the back roads of Strawberry reservoir and I felt at home, other than there was buffalo everywhere.  Nature is good for the soul.

Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore.

A lot of factors contributed to our decision to move to Montana.  Obviously the main reason was to be closer to Chris's work but we both had a lot of dreams, I guess you would say of how, we wanted to raise our family and we felt like moving out of Utah county would help us achieve that.  A few of the things we wanted in our future was the chance to have land and to teach our kids to work on that land, a smaller community that we could be involved in and would allow our kids to have many opportunities and not get lost in the masses, and a big one for me was I wanted them to be able to experience nature on a daily basis.  I wanted them to see animals, flowers, stars and to be able to notice all of God's creations every day and I felt like when we lived in Utah I made our lives too hectic and fast paced to notice the beautiful place we live in.

So far this move has been everything we hoped for and more.  We love our home and are getting past the stage of being the "new" people and feeling like we belong here.  Plus it is beautiful and impossible to ignore even if you try.  If you forget how big the sky is a thunderstorm will roll through the valley and show off an impressive fireworks display.  There are views of the mountains in every direction, impossible to get away from.  And last but not least the animals demand attention in their very own way.  The other day I had an experience that really brought home the fact I wanted to live a different type of life other than city life and with that comes some crazy situations.

Our morning started off as any normal day.  Huntley was eating breakfast while watching the antelope roaming in our pasture.  After a few minutes she let me know that one of the antelope was hurt.  We debated over it for a few minutes and then finally decided to go out and investigate.  Sure enough it had broken one of its hind legs and wasn't able to walk.  At that point it was time to take Hunt to school so we left it there and I figured I'd call fish and wildlife when I got home and see what they wanted me to do with it.

When I pulled up to our house after dropping Hunt off I noticed there was a sheriff parked near the pasture where the antelope was.  He drove up to the house and wanted to know if it was my land.  I told him it was and he let me know that someone had called him about the antelope and he had just put it down and now it was my job to take it to the dump.  I got to admit that although I don't have a problem dealing with dead animals I couldn't believe that the sheriff left a pregnant lady and three year old to deal with it.

Since it hadn't been dead for very long and besides a broken leg nothing was wrong with it I didn't feel right about taking it to the dump when the meat was still good.  I ran over to my neighbors to see if they wanted it but unfortunately they weren't home.  My stomach is a little on the weak side right now so I knew cleaning it was out of the question for me but remembered the last antelope Chris shot he just quartered it and I figured that I could probably handle that.  I tried calling my dad and father in-law to see if either of them could walk me through the process but neither answered.  I turned to Youtube and after spending a few minutes watching videos on how to quarter big game, Pais and I set off to prove what kind of Montana women we really are.  Luckily for us as she was holding the leg and I was about to make my first cut our neighbors came by and saved me from seeing how tough I can be.

My day continued on this way although not quite as extreme as dealing with dead animals.  On the way to pick up Huntley from school some horses had escaped their pasture and decided to cause a traffic jam outside of town.  Several people were trying to convince them to get out of the road but they weren't budging.  After a while a lady pulled up who happened to have a harness in the back of her car and she was able to get them to move out of the way.  By this time we were late picking up Hunt who was standing on the corner of the school not only looking a little lost but with blood stains all down the front of her shirt.  I immediately panicked and wanted to know what had happened.  Apparently she ran into someone at morning recess and gave herself a bloody nose in the process.  The office aid helped her get it to stop, cleaned her up a bit, and sent her back to class.  I was surprised that they didn't call me to bring her a change of clothes but I guess in Montana they figure a little blood never hurt anyone.  My dreams have come true and I am not living a city life anymore.  Although I think I'd be fine if I don't have a day like that ever again.

Birthday Girls

For the first time in the history of their coexistence, my girls actually got to celebrate their own birthdays instead of having a combined affair.  I actually made two different cakes, it's kind of a big deal.
Huntley had school the day of her birthday so actually having to plan for her day was pretty easy.  After school she wanted to do a "family activity" and then eat hotdogs and cake for dinner.  Easy peasy.  Until Chris changed up the originally planned family activity and made it a lot more intense but we'll get to that later on.
Paisley's birthday was pretty simple too.  I had a doctors appointment that day so we told her she could pick anything she wanted to do in the "big town."  She picked getting a snow cone.  Three is seriously my favorite age.  Since all of the snow cone shacks were closed we bought her a slurpee and she was happy as could be the rest of the day.
Now for the "family activity" and how Chris has now ruined us for all future birthdays and Christmas's for the rest of our children's lives.  The day of Huntley's birthday Chris was placing an ad on craigslist and after he was done he went and looked at the horses that were for sale.  He saw that our neighbor had just posted an ad for two of her horses and that they were perfect "kids" horses.  He called her up and arranged for the girls to go ride them after we picked Huntley up from school.
After picking Huntley up we told her we were going to go horseback riding for her birthday in case things didn't actually work out.  The girls both had a blast, the horses were perfect and from someone we knew and trusted, so by the end of the afternoon we became horse owners.  Talk about some serious birthday spoiling.
The past two weeks we've pretty much been spending all of our time welcoming Hank and Tiny to our family.  I was a little nervous about having to take care of them when Chris was gone but so far the horses seem like angels compared to the things the dogs have put me through.  Plus now my morning walk with Pais on the back of a horse instead of sitting in the stroller just makes me laugh.

Utah, again

Chris had an archery elk tag this year in Utah and originally we didn't plan on going.  After finding out Hunt wouldn't start school until after Labor Day we figured we might as well go down and have one last hurrah before school.  As soon as we got to town our first stop was Grandpa Phillips garden.
The majority of our trip was spent in his garden where we all ate as many raspberries, tomatoes and corn that we possibly could.
This trip we tried something new and slept at Josh and Kenzies which was so fun.  Josh used his awesome ovens to throw a big pizza party and we spent nights reliving our childhood and watching old movies.  Plus being in the middle of the Davis compound with millions of children around was awesome for my girls who have gotten used to a life with antelope as your companions.

The highlight of our trip was going out to Red Creek with my dad and grandpa and spending the day fishing.  Saturdays fishing at that lake are some of my best memories growing up and now I have one there with my own kids.

Our last day there Hunt informed my mom that they wouldn't be together on her birthday and she needed to throw her a party.  So with what little time she had my mom hurried and baked a cake and gave the girls presents of Elsa and Anna dresses.  They were in heaven.
The best part of the trip was it was so much fun we were exhausted by the time we got to come home.  Which made it really nice for all of us when Paisley slept the majority of the drive.  Potty training her the week before we were going to spend six hours in the car wasn't the smartest thing.

Kindergarten

It's here!  The day we've all been anxiously awaiting.  By anxious I'm referring to me and not Hunt who was cool as a cucumber.  But being the mom I was a nervous wreck and am so glad that first day is over.
Little miss sleep until ten Hunt was wide awake when I went in to wake her up at seven.  She gobbled down her breakfast, dressed in her new clothes, had her frozen hair-do done, and even had time for a little photo shoot on the porch.  Of course little sis couldn't miss out on the fun of getting pictures taken.  (The H is for home because she wanted to hold a letter and staying at home is pretty awesome.)

We drove to school and joined all the other parents and kids converging on the school.  She easily found her cubby and put her stuff away, hung up her backpack, picked out a book, took it to her desk, and told me to leave.

Which then led to me stumbling out of the school in tears and wondering how my baby got so big and grown up.  Chris got a good laugh out of my pain but was nice enough to buy me breakfast since it was too early for chocolate and bacon is the next best thing.
Now that a week has past we are all adjusting quite nicely.  Huntley loves spending the day with friends and being so entertained.  Paisley is liking the one on one time with me and the quiet time to play by herself and I'm really loving the fact she takes naps again.
Although we aren't perfect in this new phase of life and occasionally have a melt down here and there.  Like last Thursday when Hunt wanted us to take her early to school so she could eat breakfast there.  Chris and I just ignored that and poor Huntley was traumatized the next morning when she realized I made her breakfast and it was too late to eat at the school.  Apparently the school was serving cinnamon rolls that day and she really wanted one.  I felt horrible so I had my first ever attempt at making cinnamon rolls from scratch and having them waiting for an after school snack.  She loved it and I loved not feeling like a failure as a mom.  Unfortunately that is now expected and by the end of the year I'm going to have my new cinnamon roll recipe perfected.
